As Director of the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) I have oversight responsibility for all ULAM services including veterinary medical care, husbandry care, animal procurement, regulatory compliance, technical research services, clinical laboratory services, anatomic and histopathology services, faculty and staff training, and animal research consultation services for investigators. My scholarly interests include clinical laboratory animal medicine and diseases, animal models, education and training in laboratory animal medicine and science, and biohazard use in laboratory animals. My teaching responsibilities are primarily in the ULAM post-doctoral training program in laboratory animal medicine and biomedical research. This program, which has been continuously funded by NIH since 1962, is one of the oldest and most highly regarded in the country. The ULAM faculty has trained more than 70 veterinarians in laboratory animal medicine, nearly 10% of board certified laboratory animal veterinarians in the United States. The program has evolved from a clinically based program at its outset to its current iteration that combines biomedical research training for veterinary scientists with training in clinical laboratory animal medicine. My professional interests are focused on education and training in laboratory animal medicine and advancement of the field of veterinary medicine. I am the University of Michigan representative to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC). Within AAVMC I have served as a member of the Comparative Medicine Task Force (2000-2001) and of the Task Force on Emergency Needs in Veterinary Human Resources (2002-2003). I am a member of the Board of Directors of the AAVMC and Chair of the Animal Care Committee. I have also been active in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) and the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners (ASLAP), serving both organizations in a variety of roles.
