Program Overview

MENTORED RESEARCH EXPERIENCE

The program provides a minimum of 1.25 years of dedicated research training focused at the end of the three-year program.  Through the research training, residents are exposed to the development of a scientific hypotheses, the planning of experiments, testing of hypotheses, preparation of research protocols, record keeping, statistical analysis of results, fulfillment of Koch’s postulates (when appropriate), interpretation and discussion of results, and presentation of results and conclusions at meetings and through publication.

Research projects satisfy the ACLAM certification requirement of producing a first-author, hypothesis-driven publication as detailed at http://www.aclam.org/certification/requirements.html.

Research topics may be designed to investigate clinically-relevant questions or to explore an area of basic research.  The research mentor is either a clinical or research faculty member with primary or joint appointment within ULAM.  Additional University of Michigan faculty members may serve as secondary mentors.

In addition to the primary research project, residents have multiple opportunities and support to pursue additional independent and collaborative research projects throughout their program.
